Republic of Slovenia is situated in the Alps and bordered by Austria, Italy, the Adriatic Sea (with the Slovenian Riviera), Croatia and Hungary. The capital is Ljubljana. In 1991, Slovenia became independent after the Ten-Day War and the Agreement of Brioni. On May 1, 2004 Slovenia became a member of the European Union and later of NATO.
