The Republic of Finland (called Suomi in Finnish) is located in Northern Europe in Scandinavia. Finland has 5.5 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Russia, Norway and Sweden. Estonia is located on the other side of the Gulf of Finland. In addition, Finland lies on the Gulf of Bothnia and the Baltic Sea. The capital of Filand is Helsinki. Finland's nickname is "the land of a thousand lakes" because it contains 180,000 lakes. The lakes are frozen shut for at least 5 months a year. Finland is best known for its intensive use of saunas: 1.7 million saunas out of 5.5 million people. After Iceland, Finland is the northernmost state in Europe. A third of Finland is above the polar circle. Lapland (Lappi) is the largest province in Finland. Finland consists of 1.2 million hectares of protected nature area and includes 27 accessible national parks ("kansallispuisto"). There are 19 regional nature reserves that are not or only partially accessible ("luonnonpuisto"). You can visit Finland all year round: in winter Finland is popular as a winter sports destination and in the summer there are many open-air theaters and festivals.
